A straight-forward, avalanche-safe ski-tour in the Bressanone area
The Luson valley is hidden above Bressanone in South Tyrol behind the Plose – Bressanone’s local mountain and skiing area – and is not very well known amongst ski-tourers. Yet this landscape can offer some particularly beautiful, and importantly easy climbs which are also often accessible in less certain conditions. Those who want to escape the confusion of the popular destinations of the Puster valley or around Vipiteno, will certainly be able to enjoy a couple of pleasant days above Luson. I’d like to present the Maurerberg and the Campill.
The highland plateau of the Luson Alm is a beautiful destination for a ski-tour on days when you need to avoid the dangers of avalanches in other areas. The climb to Campill – one of the few striking heights on this plateau – is absolutely safe from avalanches and on a clear day can also be mastered by those less experienced in ski-tours. In fog, and without a clear track, the orientation on this broad plateau can however prove very difficult and on such occasions GPS can be particularly useful.
Area: Dolomites, Luson Valley
Direction: W
Altitude: 800 m /1100
Climbing time: 2-3 hrs
Skiing difficulty: easy
Danger of avalanches: none
Starting point: The Kompatsch hill farm, at a sharp bend above Joasenhof (approach is along the steep mountain road which is on the left shortly after Luson). Route description: From the car-parks head straight up over a clear slope to the edge of the woodland, then right along path uphill to a road. Continue along the road or cut off the many sharp bends by heading through the forest (mostly along the Sommerweg) to the Maurer Alm. Now head over the gently sloping meadows up to the Campill Alm and from here there is a very gradual climb up heading east-north-east over the plain to the highest point marked by a cross. Descent: Like the ascent. Direct ascent from the valley floor: It is also possible to climb up directly from the valley floor, which increases the altitude difference by approx. 300 m. This does however require a good snow conditions, because the low lying southern slopes quickly lose their snow. The starting point is then a car-park on the road from Luson to Petschied, approx. 300 m before the St. Nikolaus church on the right-hand side. From the car-park head back along the road a few metres over the bridge and strap on your skis on the left-hand side of the road. Now bear gradually to the left uphill into a gulley and then left up to the Örtl farmstead. Head right past the farm up to the edge of the woodland and follow a path to the left which starts off flat but then gets steeper up through the wood to the open meadows. Head up these slightly more steep meadows until you reach a pylon on the left which is visible from down in the valley. Now it’s only a little further up to the left and you’ll reach the car-park at Kompatsch. Rest points: Inns and mountain farms in Luson, for example, the Großplonerhof.
