From Luson to the Maurerberg

An easy, scenically stunning ski tour in the Bressanone area
The Luson valley is hidden above Bressanone in South Tyrol behind the Plose – Bressanone’s local mountain and skiing area – and is not very well known amongst ski-tourers. Yet this landscape can offer some particularly beautiful, and importantly, easy climbs which are also often accessible in less certain conditions. Those who want to escape the confusion of the popular destinations of the Puster valley or around Vipiteno, will certainly be able to enjoy a couple of pleasant days above Luson. I’d like to present the Maurerberg and the Campill.

The Maurerberg is the most popular ski-tour in the Luson valley. Even though there is initially quite a lot of climbing along forest tracks, this is still an exceptionally rewarding ski-tour, which provides exceptional views and in safe conditions also a beautiful northern slope.

Area: Dolomites, Luson valley
Direction: W, N
Altitude: 1200 m
Climbing time: 3 – 3.5 hrs
Skiing difficulty: easy
Danger of avalanches: occasional

Starting points: Petschied at the end of the Luson valley. Left of the stream is a small car-park (1120 m)
Route description: Head uphill from the car-park, right past the Praderhof and then bear right onto a forest track. Turn right along this track, then at the sharp bend bear left and keep heading into the valley until after crossing a stream the track bears left. Shortly after this, head straight across a meadow and up towards the Gschlierer Alm. Now head into the increasingly narrow rift (which after heavy snowfall carries risks of avalanches) up towards the Luson Pass. From here, on a clear day surrounded by the magnificent Dolomite panorama, follow the broad ridge in a south-westerly direction over two rises in a saddle and on the other side up to the open summit with a large summit cross.
Descent: In safe conditions there are numerous opportunities for a descent to the north directly down to the route of ascent. When the avalanche situation is critical though, it is better to return along the ascent route.
Rest points: Inns and mountain farms in Luson, for example the Großplonerhof.
