The Odle peaks with their north faces of up to 800 m dominate the scenery in the lower Funes valley. Looking out at this rock face you can’t fail to miss the prominent Mittags gorge, which divides these steep rocky towers into two halves. The Mittags gorge is the best crossing from north to south, although it is generally used as its own ski tour destination from the Funes valley. It will captivate you on the one hand with its wild rocky landscape and on the other its vast northern slopes are also well suited for a great, powdery descent.
Area: Dolomites, Funes valley
Direction: N
Altitude: 1200 m
Climbing time: 3 - 4 hrs
Skiing difficulty: medium
Danger of avalanches: frequent
Starting points: Ranui car-park (1350 m) or a little bit further at the forest restaurant, subject to charges. Route description: From the Ranui car-park turn right along the road by the forest edge up to the forest restaurant. A toboggan run starts here which you should follow upwards (signposted to ‘Mittagsscharte’) until after about 200 m a signpost directs you right over the stream. Follow the track for a fair way until it turns left back over the stream and then ends after two sharp bends. Here the path splits – right leads to a flat, avalanche free route to the Brogles hut and the Raschötz – our route however lies to the left. Head uphill through relatively thick woodland until it begins to thin and the land spreads out. Now without any orientation difficulties you will be able to head up the increasing steep slope towards two large rocky outbreaks and then bear left past them into a narrower gully that gets somewhat steeper. Head on up the sharp bends to the Mittags gorge, on foot probably for the last few metres because the snow in this area is often blown away. Choose your place for a snack in the spacious gorge at best on the left-hand side because the sun shines here the longest. Descent: Via the ascent route. After the gully the broad slope will give you plenty of space to make your own trail. Rest points: Inns and mountain farms in Funes, for example, the Proihof.
